Classification of Stethoscopes for different occupation

All the instruments used in medical procedures such as diagnosis, surgery or mere testing and checking might appear to be same. Or, if not same, we would not be able to make a marked distinction between any two such given instruments. But, as far as medical instruments are concerned there are various Stethoscopes for different occupation and they are customized to suit the requirements of the surgeon or doctor that uses it.

The instruments may also differ in terms of working principle or parts they are used to check or operate on. For example a syringe used to draw blood might be differently designed with different needle specifications and fluid containers depending on the body part from where the blood is drawn and the amount of blood to be drawn. One of the most widely used medical instruments which is somewhat familiar to common people on account of easy sighting at any physician’s chamber, is the stethoscope.

To us the stethoscope might be a very simple looking medical instrument simply used to amplify the sound signals captured as vibrations and make it audible in the hearing aid where the vibrations are transferred but to people claiming practice or expertise in medical field there are different gradations and purposes of stethoscopes.

Stethoscopes for different occupation are designed to have certain specific features along with the basic characteristics of a common stethoscope. Several medical practitioners used customized and specially made telescopes for the work they do and hence find it easier to accomplish their work in a shorter time frame and with less difficulties and anomalous circumstances.

On preparing a list of the several types of stethoscopes available in today’s market, the division would not be that categorical and the list might also be a large if one has to list all the available stethoscopes for various medical purposes. The advent of technology has definitely increased the number of medical instrument manufactured as compared to the type and number of medical instruments that were made back in the old days when instruments were merely mechanical and rarely found. Still. A sketchy and broad spectrum categorization would list the following kinds of stethoscopes according to their features.

Acoustic Stethoscope

It is the primitive doctor’s tool and the most widely used stethoscope of all times. The original model cited years back might have gone modifications but the mould of the design and purpose of the instrument along with the working principle is still intact.

It is the model that you have been seeing in your doctor’s chamber since your childhood and also in those toy doctor sets. These mainly are the stethoscopes for EMT. The vibrations captured from the source that is the diaphragm move up the transmitting fibers right up to the earpieces where the sound is received by the doctor letting him know of all he wants to know from the vibrations coming from the body part he has placed the receiver on.

The empty tubes that connect the earpieces with the diaphragm contain air which forms the medium of transmission for the sound waves through the stethoscopes. In an acoustic model, there is seen, a couple of sides to the chest piece. The sounds of a lower frequency range are captured by the bell whereas the sound waves of higher frequency are picked up from the source by the diaphragm. Electronic stethoscope

This is a comparatively modern version of stethoscope. It is not as common as the acoustic one as its purpose is more definite than its predecessor. The electronic stethoscope is also referred to as the stethophone and it uses the technological aid of electrical transducers, Electrical transducers are used to convert the incoming sound signal to an electrical signal which can then be amplified sufficiently.

There are reasons as to why it is not as widely used as some of the other variants. It is not very easy to operate and has a bit of complexity and hence avoided by many doctors. It is not one of the suitable stethoscopes for Veterinarians but might be considered as one of the options in the category of stethoscopes for EMT.

As mentioned earlier, its purpose is definite and is used for diverse functions like monitoring and remote diagnosis. Since it’s an electrically manipulated instrument, an additional feature is the transformation to a wireless device which can then be used from a distance by medical practitioners for monitoring purposes. It is definitely one of the Stethoscopes for different occupation.

Recording stethoscope

It comes under the category of electronic stethoscope but has more to it than just the electronic handling. It has provisions for a recording device to be attached to the main device and hence the name. The most important use is the ability to capture the sounds and keep it for later referral. Thus, doctors can use the device to gather a patient’s information and keep a track record. The recorded data can be later used to discuss a patient’s case with other doctors as well in case such a situation is beckoned. The boards of doctors can then consult and reach conclusion in terms of the patient’s condition based on the recording. Recording stethoscopes are also stethoscopes for different occupation.

Fetal stethoscopes

The name is in itself suggestive of its purpose. It is also referred to as a fetoscope. It might appear to be a trumpet shaped instrument. The gynecologists use it to obtain sounds from a pregnant woman’s womb. They put the receiver of the instrument on the woman’s womb from outside and slide it to capture sounds from inside. The French scientists are experts in preparation of advanced medical instruments and the invention of this one was no exception to that fact. An Obstetrician from France named Adolph Pinard has the idea of making such a stethoscope to help doctors read sound signals from the womb.

These are few of the stethoscopes that doctors today find handy. Of course, the list is long and is expected to grow longer by the years.
